Discutabele didactische zaken

Six Strategies for Effective Learning

"These resources were created based on research from cognitive psychology from the past few decades. To learn more about how we created the materials, see this blog. The materials are intended to teach about principles of learning and to provide teachers and students with flexible guiding principles to guide learning and studying. However, they are not intended to fix all problems within education. Further, we cannot guarantee success, and we cannot predict students' grades based on the use of these strategies. There are a lot of variables at play during learning, and we hope these materials can help teachers and learners to make evidence-based decisions. If you have questions about the science, try searching our blog and peruse our FAQ page."

The digital transformation of learning: Social, informal, self-service, and enjoyable

"The vast co-created commons of the internet have long been seen as a way for the connected and motivated to learn on their own. However, as digital has fundamentally changed how we find knowledge and share information with each other, it has also steadily shifted the landscape of learning itself: The typical person today is far more likely to reach for their mobile phone to learn something than find a relevant book or go to the library."

Is it Better to Teach Pure Math Instead of Applied Math?

Abstract, pure math — solving disembodied equations filled with x’s and y’s —  can often seem boring. Creative math teachers commonly try to come up with concrete, real-world examples to motivate students and make math relevant to adolescents.

But a new report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) finds that applied-math instruction, or the way it is actually taught in classrooms, may not be serving students well. Furthermore, it found that teachers were often using a watered-down, applied-math approach in classrooms of low-income students, while giving higher income students much more exposure to pure math.

The beauty that surrounds us

"In class, when we get tired of factoring polynomials, I tell my students that life is all about discovering the beauty that surrounds us – math, music, poetry, the structure of a living organism. You only need to have the patience to learn the proper language to see it."

The False Dichotomy Between Memorization and Conceptual Understanding

"Experts have lost track of vast amounts of building block knowledge, because it long ago moved to long-term memory. They haven’t had to think much about these things for years, making it easy to overlook important chunks of their own expertise."
